How to store your cigars in your humidor?

After acquiring your humidor, you "prepared" it to receive your cigars: the cedar has been moistened, the humidifier is "moisturized," the hygrometer is calibrated... Fill it up!

Find 5 tips provided by a humidor professional to know all the tricks for storing your cigars in your humidor!

First tip

If your humidifier is positioned vertically in your cigar humidor, place your cigars with the head toward the humidifier. Indeed, if the foot of the cigar (open end) is close to the humidifier, it will absorb moisture unevenly (foot more humid) and the tasting experience that follows will be affected.

Second tip

Humidifiers are often placed on the inner side of the humidor lids.

I recommend placing a sheet of cedar (which can be found in cigar boxes), larger than your humidifier, on your cigars located just under this humidifier.

This way, these cigars will not absorb all the moisture. The cedar sheet will allow for a better distribution of humidity in your humidor. Moreover, you will notice that it will even tend to (slightly) warp.

Third tip

If your cigar humidor has a slatted shelf in the middle (as in the photo below), place your humidifier not horizontally… but vertically, just above the opening.

This will improve the distribution of humidity. The cigars on the shelf will not be too close together, and the cigars at the back of the humidor will then also be able to fully benefit from this humidifier.The hygrometer will then be moved to the left or to the right.

Fourth tip

As you have understood, the humidity of the cigar humidor is therefore regulated by the humidifier, but this humidity level near the humidifier will be slightly higher.If you like to smoke certain regions that are more humid than others (personally, I keep my Nicaraguan cigars more humid than my Cuban or Dominican cigars), these cigars will be placed closest to the humidifier.

Last advice

Not all your "tenants" have signed the same lease… Let me explain: some cigars will not stay long in your humidor (the "everyday" cigars) while others (often more exceptional) might even extend the lease before the owner decides toto taste.

In this case, the latter are more likely to stay at the back of your cigar humidor. So, regularly, rotate them…play with your cigars…bring forward the ones at the back and move down the privileged surface ones… This will help achieve a better homogenization of the humidification of your treasures.
