In the 19th century, during the Battle of Sevastopol, a French soldier (also known as a Zouave) had his clay pipe broken by a bullet. He had the brilliant idea to roll his tobacco in a torn sheet. In 1894, the Braunstein Brothers perfected the process of layering the sheets in a zigzag manner and presented a booklet of cigarette paper under the name Zig Zag. In 1900, the Zigzag brand gained international recognition. Today, Zouave and Zigzag are known worldwide as a premium cigarette paper.
