Bong, water pipe, shisha… how can you tell the difference?

Smokers' jargon can quickly become complex, especially for beginners who want to try new experiences. There are many pieces of equipment and accessories on the market, such as the bong, the water pipe, the hookah, the weed pipe, etc. But in reality, what is the real difference between all these objects?

The bong

Also called 'bong', the bong is nothing other than a tobacco pipe. By definition, its use is intended to experiment with another way of smoking tobacco. Some also use it with herbs such as sage, marijuana, or even to consume so-called harder substances like methamphetamine or crack.

It requires the use of water to operate and allows inhaling the smoke of the burned substance. Prices range from around 5 to 50 euros, and one can find glass, acrylic, or silicone bongs.

The water pipe

The water pipe is also called a "tobacco pipe" in many countries. Just like the bong, it is originally used for smoking tobacco, although many divert its use to consume soft drugs or even some hard drugs.

It requires a water supply to function, although sometimes a few users use alcohol to boost the effects of their experience. As for price, the water pipe is more expensive, ranging from 30 to 200 euros for luxury models.

The weed pipe

Few shops will offer you this type of product, because the legislation in many countries does not allow the consumption of weed on their territory. In any case, the weed pipe works on the same principle as a tobacco or water pipe. It is more discreet because it is smaller and is mainly made of glass. It is possible to find some starting at 5 euros and up to 60 euros for certain sought-after aesthetics.

The hookah or waterpipe

A little different from the first three items, the hookah, also called a narguile, works with water and charcoal. It is the burning of the charcoal that allows the aromas of the tobacco, essential oils, or simply fruits and molasses to be released.

Often made of glass, they can also be found in wood, stainless steel, coconut shell, or porcelain. The price is generally around 50 euros on average, although it is possible to find some for about thirty euros. Collectors can spend up to 300, or even 500 euros for some pieces.

To put it simply, all these smoking accessories have the same initial function, and their use differs very significantly. It will be mainly limited to the way of drawing due to the width and length of the tubes, which can vary. The only notable change lies in the aesthetics as well as in the design and shape. Some smokers will prefer the sensations of one object over another, a choice specific to each person.
