The lighter is becoming a must-have jewellery accessory

Fashion can be surprising. For a few years now, designers have been showing lighters as pieces of jewellery in their own right. Worn around the neck or on a pair of jeans, the lighter took the lion’s share of attention during fashion week 2020.

The lighter as a designer’s jewel?

As far back as 2018, lighters were being presented as fashion accessories. The trend grew stronger in 2020, in particular at the fashion week showing the spring-summer collections. Céline, Rick Owens and a number of other designers put the lighter worn around the neck forward as the new must-have.

Lighter-holder jewellery seems to have genuinely caught the eye of the fashion giants, who have been happy to display it on a long chain. In black or in fine gold, the lighter holder was a must-have of spring-summer 2020.

Small lighter pouches as jewellery

Long chains have long been an asset to an outfit, and they have traditionally been brightened up with charms, beads, small tassels or ribbons. This year, it seems to be the turn of the lighter holder to be worn proudly around the neck.

Ambush had already opened hostilities in 2018 with less conventional outfits, and repeated the exercise this year. This time it was a male model who proudly wore the lighter-holder chain around his neck.

Bourgeois, seventies, casual or formal, the chain adapts to every outfit. At fashion week, Céline accessorised its models with this unexpected piece of jewellery, most often worn over a shirt topped by a rather smart jacket, in contrast with high-waisted jeans.

Rick Owens, for his part, went XXL with lighter holders attached to very metallic oversized necklaces. The trend is visibly gaining ground and could soon become a genuine fashion accessory among city fashionistas. What about you? Would you be ready to wear your lighter around your neck?
