The humidor belonging to the captain of the Titanic, a gift to him from the shipping company, has been sold for £25,000 (more than $40,000). This one-off piece was the subject of a large auction with bidders from around the world, present in person or online.

The humidor was found at an antique dealer’s in Liverpool, England. Engraved with the initials EJS for Captain Edward John Smith and topped with a white star for the White Star Line, it is a relic for enthusiasts of the Titanic and of cigars.

Captain Smith had a particular liking for Cuban cigars, and those still in the box will be smoked by the private club that bought it. The humidor will then be lent to various Titanic exhibitions across Europe.
