Travelling with your cigars: a practical guide

For a cigar smoker, travelling can be a risky business. Without precautions and the right equipment, cigars can quickly turn into piles of dead leaves. Here is how to travel with your cigars.

A solution for each kind of trip

If you are travelling for a weekend or a short stay, you can easily carry your cigars in a small case. One, two or three cigars: taking your best ones with you is straightforward.

If you are away a little longer, say a week or ten days, and you smoke only occasionally, the cigar case will again be your best option for carrying your cigars. Do make sure, though, to choose a larger capacity: there are cases that hold up to 5 cigars.

Off on holiday or on a business trip for longer than that? In that case we would suggest taking a travel humidor. It is the best way to keep your cigars in good condition over a longer period.

Which humidor to take for a holiday or a long stay?

If you have a small humidor, you can perfectly well slip it into your luggage, wedging it firmly among your clothes or in a bath towel. If your cigars come from prized crops and you are worried about their condition, go instead for a hard case, which is better suited to travel because it is sturdier.

If you are travelling by car, never leave your humidor in the passenger compartment, especially in hot weather. That could have an adverse effect on the humidity level of your cigars and above all on the temperature inside the humidor.

Take care when flying too: the air in the hold is very dry and your cigars may suffer. Humidors must have a hygrometer and be perfectly airtight. Remember also to check the condition of your humidor before travelling. If it is damaged, or if its wood is not of good quality, you may come to regret it.
