A custom humidor made by a cabinetmaker

Here is a one-off humidor. A box made with all the care and craftsmanship of one of our customers. Pascal Bonino, a designer and cabinetmaker, designed this cigar box himself, and you can see it in the photographs illustrating this article.

To make the humidor fully functional, Mr Bonino turned to Smoking.fr for his cigar accessories. A 55 mm gold-finish spring hygrometer and a gold-finish Rondo Luxe humidifier keep this fine box working as it should.

A new challenge, and a successful one

This humidor project came out of a specific request from one of his customers, who came to Mr Bonino asking him to build a small cigar box. Although the work was new to him, it fitted squarely within his skills and the purpose of his company Wood and More: « one-off pieces, pared-back design and a detailed study of the functions required », as Mr Bonino puts it.

Far more than a humidor, a work of art…

Such is the motto of our cabinetmaker, and it gives meaning to what he makes.
Needless to say, this humidor was built with due craft. The body is in red cedar, and the corners in sycamore maple and walnut. The lid is in sycamore maple, walnut and sliced plane wood with a leather insert. The choice of materials matters greatly in the design of a humidor, since they play a fundamental role in keeping the havanas in good condition. To improve the seal, he also added a cork gasket around the inner rim. Inside, red cedar supports for the cigars are arranged so that every format is accepted, from the cigarillo to the Grand Corona by way of the Robusto.

A command of materials is essential

« I chose red cedar to give his cigars the best possible storage conditions. The grain of the pieces I selected was enough in itself to give a pure design, so I decided not to veneer the cedar. The cedar is left untreated on the inside. »

Our cabinetmaker put his complete command of the various materials to work on this humidor, in order to provide an inner and outer environment suited to storing cigars and resistant to outside conditions.

« To protect the cedar from knocks, however, as it is fairly soft, I used maple pillars, a hard wood.
The walnut set into the pillars and the lid is only there to echo the white of the maple… and the colour of the cigars.
The shape of the lid is asymmetrical, which makes it easy to grip when opening and closing. It stays upright on its own with no risk of closing unexpectedly.
Two pieces of leather are built in to give a « warm » feel when handling the lid.
The plane wood on the lid, sliced on the bias, was chosen to echo the leather. It looks like leather and feels like it too, but it is wood… » our cabinetmaker tells us.

All this painstaking work took him 4 days, to his great satisfaction.
The result is more than convincing: this home-made piece by our customer is both good-looking and functional, a challenge met by Pascal Bonino, whom we congratulate on his talent.

According to Mr Bonino, the choice of hygrometer was dictated by its characteristics: adjustable, accurate and good-looking. He likes the hair principle, even if the hair is synthetic.
As for the humidifier, its design is consistent with the hygrometer and the system is simple and natural.
