How to travel with your shisha?

Taking your shisha on a trip

If you use a shisha and do not want to leave yours behind when you go on holiday, it can perfectly well travel with you. By car and by train there is no particular problem. On a plane, however, a few rules apply.

It is indeed possible to travel with your shisha by plane. As everyone knows, though, checked luggage is often handled roughly during loading and unloading, and the risk of breakage is higher. It is therefore very important to protect your shisha properly to avoid any trouble. Bath towels will do to wedge it in place, and above all use a hard-shell suitcase.

There are also bags made specifically for carrying a shisha in the hold, which spares it a good deal of trouble. That said, it is also possible to travel with your shisha as hand luggage if you have a suitable bag: it will be well protected and unlikely to break. Do bear in mind, however, the dimensions imposed by airlines for cabin baggage.

Warning: some components are banned

Setting up a shisha inevitably requires charcoal, and that is where things get complicated, since carrying charcoal on board a plane is strictly forbidden. You may still transport it in the hold. To be clear, we are talking about charcoal and not self-lighting discs, which are banned outright, including in the hold.

Some people have got through with self-lighting discs in the hold, but be aware that in the event of a check, officers are entitled to open your case and confiscate these items. Depending on where you are travelling, you may also be in for a very unpleasant time.
