What is a shisha?

To begin with, it is worth explaining what a shisha is. It is a water pipe used to smoke tobacco. It comes from the Middle East, and the word chicha, of Persian origin, means glass.

There are many models, in various sizes. The shisha can be used alone or in a group. Its particularity is that the tobacco can be combined with a range of natural essences, such as fruit, herbs and other flavours.

How a shisha is manufactured

Shishas were once all made by hand. Each was therefore a unique piece, though not always an optimal one. Today, manufacturing techniques have moved on a great deal. Some makers continue to blow the glass or shape certain parts by hand, keeping an old craft alive. Others have chosen to machine their parts in order to improve the quality of their products.

There are luxury shishas, all made meticulously by hand. They answer a very particular demand from exacting customers. At the other end of the scale, miniature shishas are easy to find at very low prices. Between the two, several manufacturers offer well-made pieces that are as attractive as they are practical.

The various parts of a shisha

The central feature of a shisha remains its glass vase. It comes in several shapes and in a range of colours. It is the vase that gives the shisha its name. It has to be filled with water in use. On top of it sits the valve, the link between the vase and the combustion system.

Above the vase, the ashtray and the bowl top off the shisha so that the charcoal and the tobacco can burn. Finally, a shisha would not be one without a hose.
