The Leatherman Tread is a 25-tool Swiss army knife worn like a bracelet. A few weeks ago the American brand Leatherman unveiled the TREAD, an unusual Swiss army knife fitted with 25 tools. Here is what makes it so distinctive.

A one-of-a-kind Swiss army knife bracelet

This is a genuine multi-tool worn like a bracelet, both fashionable and practical, a tool for every job that can be taken anywhere, including on a plane. It draws on the know-how Leatherman has built up over more than 30 years of multi-tools, applied to everyday problems.

Leatherman’s chief executive, Ben Rivera, explains that the idea came to him during a visit to Disneyland, when he was stopped by security staff at the entrance to the park because of a blade that was in fact one of the functions of his Skeletool multi-tool. He goes on: “That is when I told myself there had to be another way of carrying my tools with me without alarming security.” The Leatherman Tread project was born.

The Tread bracelet, 25 tools within reach

On the technical side, the multi-tool bracelet is made from 17-4 stainless steel, a material known for its strength and its high resistance to corrosion. No fewer than 25 tools are spread across the links that make up the Tread bracelet. Once folded, it reveals screwdriver bits, wrenches of various shapes, Allen keys, a box cutter, a traditional bottle opener and, more unusually, a pin for a mobile phone SIM tray, all quick and easy to get hold of.

Leatherman also offers the Tread as a watch strap, the QM1, made in Switzerland and combining 20 tools with a dial and a quartz movement resistant to knocks and scratches.
