Looking at your bank card, you may notice a symbol made up of a series of curved lines set vertically. That symbol means you can pay remotely, or contactlessly, at a terminal without entering your PIN, which can be convenient.

A security weakness in your bank card

But this system falls short of the security you are entitled to expect, because your card can be read remotely or demagnetised if you take no precautions. So if you are travelling on a bus or a train, or standing in a queue, it is quite possible for someone who looks entirely harmless to capture your card data with a special device. The same applies when you are shopping in the street or in a shopping centre, since the waves emitted by your card can be picked up several metres away.
