How do you recognise a quality pipe?

As with many products, you might think that a high price guarantees quality in a pipe. That is not always true. What counts as a quality pipe varies from one smoker to the next. Some features come up again and again, however. Here is how to tell that a pipe is a good one.

A question of price

Some pipes are very expensive, others more affordable. Entry-level pipes may be ideal to start with, but the smoker will soon want a better-made object.

Without paying 15,000 euros for your pipe, you will find excellent products from 80 euros upwards.

The material

Here too it is a matter of choice. Many experienced pipe smokers agree, however: briar is the best material for a good pipe. The older the briar, the better it withstands the heat of combustion.

There are of course purists who swear only by corn cob or meerschaum pipes. Again, it is all a matter of taste.

Finishes and additional accessories

Waxed, natural, varnished, rustic and so on: pipes come in a great many finishes. Some will prefer a glossier look, others something more rustic, others again a natural one. What makes a quality pipe in aesthetic terms is particular to each smoker.

It can easily be said, on the other hand, that one pipe is better made than another if it takes a 9 mm metal filter to steady the draw. But here too, some smokers prefer to go without, just as some prefer short stems to long ones, ebonite to acrylic, and so on.

Put simply, a quality pipe will always depend on the tastes and expectations of each smoker. The recurring criteria are of course briar construction, short stems for those who smoke outdoors and long ones for those who smoke indoors, and 9 mm filters for most.
