Choosing the right cigar cutter

There is a wide choice of cigar cutters on the market. They are not all equal, and depending on the ring gauges you prefer, some models are more suitable than others. Here is how to choose the right cigar cutter.

Cutting a cigar: a skill to be learned

Cutting the cigar is an unavoidable step. The cap has to be removed properly: a badly cut cigar will not burn correctly, the wrapper may come away and draw problems can follow. There are 4 types of cigar cutter, described below along with the type of cigar each one suits.

The single or double blade guillotine cutter

This is the most widespread and the most widely used model. It comes with a single or a double blade. Its strong point is that it cuts the cap precisely and cleanly. The draw is helped by what is known as a wide cut. Watch the diameter of your cigar, as the tool has to match it.

Be aware that it takes some practice to get used to the guillotine cigar cutter. Double blade models are easier to handle. If in doubt, start with a spring-loaded double blade.

The cigar punch

This is the tool to favour when starting out, as it is very simple and gives a clean cut. You push the punch into the head and, with a twisting movement, remove a small circle from the cap. It has to match the size of the cigar, so choose the model carefully.

The V cutter

More demanding to use, this type of cutter removes a section of the wrapper at the head. The notch it makes allows a good draw. There are three kinds of V cut: table, plunger or blade. Note that they are not recommended for pointed cigars.

Cigar scissors

This is an old system, used only by purists. Elegant, they remain difficult to handle. On the other hand they cut every diameter without distinction. The movement is a demanding one, since the pressure has to be judged while twisting at the same time.
