Incense: what is it for?

Taken directly from the Latin word incendere, meaning to burn, incense covers all the plant materials that give off a natural scent as they burn. There are three different types of incense today: resins, wood and plant-based incense. So-called true incense, however, comes from the resin of a tree that only grows in Africa, the Middle East and India: Boswellia sacra, the frankincense tree.

In other words, true incense is said in that tradition to treat certain lung and liver conditions. It has also been suggested that true incense influences mood by acting directly on hormones.
