No rise in the price of tobacco in 2016

It is now official: the French National Assembly has rejected the proposal by Mrs Delaunay, a Socialist member of parliament, to raise the price of a pack of cigarettes by one euro.

Last Thursday the National Assembly therefore refused to pass on this steep rise in the price of tobacco for 2016, as some Socialist members of parliament had wanted. The member for Gironde, Michèle Delaunay, was seeking a 30% increase in the price of a pack of rolling tobacco and a rise of one euro on the price of a pack of cigarettes. The target set over three years was to reach the “psychological threshold” of 10 euros a pack.

“During the examination of the social security funding bill (PLFSS 2016) this afternoon, all of Michèle Delaunay’s tobacco amendments, backed by more than 60 Socialist and Green members of parliament, were defeated or withdrawn, on an unfavourable opinion from the government and from the social affairs committee.”

The member for Gironde has already announced that she “would return to the charge at second reading”.

Fighting for the plain pack rather than a price rise

The finance minister Michel Sapin announced on the LCP channel that the government prefers to “fight on the question of the plain pack”.
