Smokers of electronic cigarettes who have gone for a starter pack will find refills inside it. Other electronic cigarette users, and everyone else once the kit has been used up, have to buy cartridges — refills, in other words.

Electronic cigarette refills in general

Depending on the electronic cigarette pack, the number of refills varies between 2 and 5. The figure most often observed is 2 e-cigarette refills. The e-cigarette is simply another name for the electronic cigarette.

As a general rule, the electronic cigarette refill is flavoured with light or dark tobacco. Other flavourings are available, mint, strawberry or apple for instance. Whatever the taste chosen, the presence of nicotine can be selected separately, in this case light or ultra light.

The refills for these e-cigarettes are fitted onto the electronic cigarette. The shape of the refill, its capacity and the way it attaches differ from one manufacturer to another. It is therefore important to check that the refill is compatible with your electronic cigarette.

Buying another discovery pack remains possible if need be, although the point of the electronic cigarette lies in buying refills. Some refills are said to correspond to 50 conventional cigarettes.

The capacity of the cartridge is sometimes expressed in puffs rather than in numbers of conventional cigarettes. Where puffs are used, the figure generally observed is 300. This applies to electronic cigarettes, since cartridge capacity is greater for the electronic cigar and for the electronic pipe.

What does an electronic cigarette cartridge contain?

The refill is a cartridge, comparable to an ink cartridge: it holds the liquid of the electronic cigarette. The liquid contains the artificial flavouring of the e-cigarette. It evaporates as it mixes with the air, when the user draws on the device through an electronic process, hence the name of the cigarette. This evaporation resembles the smoke of a conventional cigarette, without the smell that goes with it.

How quickly a refill is used up does not depend solely on the number of puffs, but rather on the draw. The stronger the draw, the more liquid is called upon. Conversely, a weak draw triggers nothing at all: the electronic cigarette is programmed to switch off below a certain threshold, in order to preserve the refill. That is one of the first things a user of electronic cigarettes has to learn: finding the right draw.
