The electronic cigarette credited with the fall in smoking in France

According to the latest surveys, smoking has fallen back and the electronic cigarette is said to have played a part in it. Tobacco sales dropped above all because the price of a packet of cigarettes went up, but the use of the electronic cigarette is credited with having influenced behaviour and contributed to the fall in tobacco consumption.

Unlike the conventional cigarette, the e-cigarette contains no tar, no tobacco and no carbon monoxide. It has spread widely and is sold in specialist shops. It attracts particular interest among people dependent on tobacco, who see in it, according to these surveys, a way of moving away from smoking gradually. Statistics of the time reported a growing number of users saying they were satisfied with it, on the grounds that it does not produce the same drawbacks as tobacco, such as the nuisance of smoke or ash.
Depending on the liquid chosen, however, the electronic cigarette will still contain nicotine, a harmful and addictive substance.
