The cigar among public figures

The cigar has spread well beyond a world that used to be regarded as belonging « to men ».
Long-standing cigar smokers, men and women alike, tend to hold the same view: that anyone who smokes cigarettes or a pipe will sooner or later turn to cigars.
A closer look shows that well-known women feature in the picture too.

Among them is Linda Evangelista, the Canadian top model who in 1995 became the first woman to appear on the cover of Cigar Aficionado magazine, followed the next year by Demi Moore, the American actress known for Ghost, Striptease and GI Jane, among other films.

It has to be said, however, that it is men who have most regularly been pictured with a cigar in hand or in mouth.
Examples are not hard to find: Fidel Castro and Che Guevara, Nicolas Sarkozy (a member of the club of French parliamentarians who smoke havanas), John Kennedy and, of course, Winston Churchill, who smoked cigars throughout his life, for nearly 70 years. So much so that his usual cigar, the 19 cm double corona, now bears his name.
The cigar has thus often been associated with figures in positions of power, and often in company.
Nor has it been absent from the media.

The cigar has often appeared on the small screen, sometimes to the point of being inseparable from the characters played by actors. That was the case for the actor who played Columbo in the series of the same name, and for Bill Cosby in the television series « The Cosby Show », with his Hoyo de Monterrey double corona.
Arnold Schwarzenegger, who also smoked cigars, went as far as becoming co-owner of the private cigar club in Beverly Hills called « The Havana Room ».
